- W182890820 abstract "This chapter introduces an allometric approach to analyze the macroscopic development of the small and large intestine before and after weaning, a drastic nutritional challenge for mammals. Allometric expression consists of comparing the relation of two measurements, ignoring all the complexities and detailed changes in form after the logarithmic transformation of data. The small and large intestine employ different digestive strategies—auto-enzymic digestion and alloenzymic (microbial) digestion respectively. Further, the macro- and microscopic structure, mucin composition and functions such as ion transport or motility vary along different segments of the large intestine. The size of the intestinal tract of the rat does not adapt to nutritional changes at weaning, but instead is prepared for weaning beforehand. Allometric analysis demonstrates that the growth of the small and large intestine is biphasic. Intestinal growth is faster than body growth during the suckling period and slows down after weaning. Weaning reduces the growth rate of the intestine. Allometric analysis of rat intestinal growth also suggests the heterogeneity among intestinal segments. The relative proportion of the large intestine increases during the suckling period." @default.
