- W1829381341 abstract "Queueing networks are used extensively for the performance analysis of computer and communication systems. There are no exact analytic results available for open queueing networks with general arrival processes and general service demands at First Come First Serve service centers. To the best of our knowledge, the only alternative available besides simulation is traffic based decomposition where the network is partitioned into subnetworks of individual nodes which are studied in isolation. The arrival processes to these nodes are approximated and the relevant arrival representations determine the accuracy of the measures of interest. In this dissertation we study different aspects of a single server node. In the first part of the dissertation, we study a single sever queue where the arrival and the service processes are possibly correlated and a new method is proposed to compute the different performance measures using a spectral decomposition of a coupling matrix. This method is computationally more efficient than existing iterative approaches and in special cases analytical closed form solutions can be found. For instance, we provide an explicit expression for the steady state waiting time distribution of a G/M/1 queue in terms of the free parameters of the arrival process. In the second part of the dissertation, we propose a family of finite approximations for the departure process of a G1/G/1 queue, indexed by a parameter k, representing the system size of the finite approximation. The approximations capture the inter-departure times exactly and preserve the lag correlations of inter-event times of the departures up to lag (k - 1). We also propose a family of finite approximations for the departure process of a tagged stream from a single server queue in a multiplexed environment. These approximations can quantify the impact of individual streams and capture the distortions that have been introduced due to multiplexing." @default.
