- W183130812 abstract "Discoveries of seminal importance are sometimes made simultaneously. In 1962 when E.J. Hart and J.W. Boag first identified the absorption spectrum of the hydrated electron [1], W.H.Hamill and his coworkers stated “Gamma irradiation of pure tetrahydro-2-methylfuran produced a broad absorption band originating at @ 4000 A and increasing monotonically to the limit of observation at 13,000 A… Electrons are trapped and solvated in tetrahydro-2-methylfuran...” [2]. The furan, more commonly called 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF), had been exploited for the study of radical anions by the group of GJ. Hoijtink, a pioneer of the spectroscopic study of the radical anions of aromatic hydrocarbons [3]. Going further back in 1954 H. Linschitz et al. [4], following G.N. Lewis [5, 6], succeeded in observing the visible-near IR absorption spectrum of photolytically produced solvent-trapped electrons in a glassy mixture of ether-isopentane-triethylamine-methylamine." @default.
