- W183242105 abstract "This chapter discusses the crucial role of the macrophage both in the induction of the immune response and as a powerful effector cell. In the latter capacity, macrophages ingest and dispose of a variety of organisms, kill tumor cells, and participate in a number of immunopathologic processes. Macrophages obtained from immune animals have altered the morphology and the metabolism, and exhibit an enhanced ability to deal with a number of microorganisms. Such macrophages are said to be activated. Recent studies suggest that in vivo activation of macrophages requires the interaction of specifically sensitized T lymphocytes with the appropriate antigen. The question arises as to how the interaction of lymphocytes with antigen leads to the activation of macrophages. Ever since the discovery that sensitized lymphocytes produce a soluble material, migration inhibitory factor, which affects the behavior of macrophages, it has been thought that such lymphocyte mediators might also activate macrophages. The chapter presents the studies that demonstrate that lymphocyte mediators can indeed activate macrophages." @default.
