- W183254927 abstract "The specific transport carriers of biomembranes have become in the last few years one of the most discussed challenges of present-day biochemistry. Studies on the ADP, ATP translocator of the inner mitochondrial membrane have contributed considerably to enlarge our understanding of the translocation mechanism on the molecular basis. Nature has provided unusually favorable conditions for elucidating the mechanism and molecular properties of this system: (1) it is the most active transport system in aerobic eukaryotic cells and, therefore, present in high concentrations in the mitochondria membranes; (2) two groups of highly specific inhibitors have been provided by nature which seem to be engineered exactly for the purpose of tracking a translocation mechanism for the first time on a molecular level. Not enough, these inhibitors then turned out to be instrumental in the first isolation of an undenatured metabolite carrier." @default.
