- W1835716797 abstract "Cotton was the most important commodity in the economyof the industrialized Western world in the mid-nineteenth century,as vital then as petroleum is today. It was widely believed that aprolonged interruption of the cotton supply would lead not merelyto a severe economic depression, but possibly to the collapse ofWestern Civilization. Three quarters of the world’s cotton supplycame from the Southern states of the United States. When theAmerican Civil War erupted and cotton supplies were cut off, theBritish Cotton Supply Association was faced with the difficult taskof establishing cotton cultivation in other locations. In order forthe effort to succeed, the British had to obtain and distributemillions of pounds of American cotton seeds. The United Statesgovernment, the Illinois Central Railroad, and a number oforganizations and individuals cooperated to obtain the necessaryseeds that the British had to have. American farm equipmentmanufacturers assisted by designing, making, and distributingportable cotton gins and other implements needed by cotton growersoverseas. U.S. consuls overseas sometimes assisted the CottonSupply Association with seed and equipment distribution. Thisdissertation is about the implementation of the grand economicstrategies of the United States and Great Britain. It is also aboutthe people who implemented those strategies on the ground, peopleas diverse as Union agents who went into Confederate territory toprocure cotton seeds, farmers in Illinois, British consuls whodistributed seeds grown in Illinois to farmers in the OttomanEmpire, and English colonists who flocked to Fiji with high hopesof becoming cotton planters. It attempts to measure the impact ofthe cotton boom and subsequent bust that resulted from the AmericanCivil War on societies around the world." @default.
