- W183660658 abstract "Responding to unique needs of K-12 education, EduQuest has introduced three new models of IBM PS/2 computers under its own label. All are designed from ground up for use in schools. Highlights of Models Thirty, Forty and Fifty are built-in multimedia capabilities, extra security features including custom ROM, and especially rugged components. time we put children, as well as teachers and administrators, in focus groups, says Tom Greaves, manager of educational technology for EduQuest and IBM Corp. Accordingly, this new generation of PS/2s reflects what real people - students and adults - actually need for day-to-day use. * Optimized for K-12 Although only three models are listed, 340 different configurations are available. EduQuest custom builds each computer to order. This is a new way of doing business for us, notes Greaves. it's good for schools, because we optimize [machines] just for them. Greaves explains that EduQuest brought out its own PS/2 line because our market's needs are different than business' needs. All EduQuest models feature fast processors, special graphics subsystems and anti-virus software burned into ROM. Indeed, special EduROM was designed just for schools. A footprint and piggyback power cords facilitate placement in school labs and other tight spots. Built-in Token Ring or Ethernet networking is achieved using small, new EduQuest Cards that plug into an Option Card Connector Board. This keeps both full-size ISA adapter slots open for other options. A 14 monitor either 640 x 480 for Model Thirty or 1,024 x 768 for Models Forty and Fifty, come standard. In addition to two full-size slots and two EduQuest Card slots, all systems have three drive bays that enable range of devices, including tape backup, rewriteable optical and CD-ROM drives, to be pre-installed. * Small |Niceties' Loom Large Finally, educators should note that EduQuest has paid special attention to small things that, in everyday use, loom large. A bolt-down bar for securing units to desktops is included as is tilt wedge for monitor. A diskette dustshield guards against death by chalkdust. And in direct response to the number one irritant, according to user feedback, is newly designed School Mouse. It requires special tools to remove trackball and to detach tail that tethers it to machine - no more unusable computers due to inoperable or lost mice. Front-panel controls provide easier access, especially for physically challenged students. Volume control, microphone jack and audio speaker are located there. Also there are not one, but two built-in 1/4 headphone jacks, which greatly facilitate cooperative learning (1/8 jacks were found to be susceptible to breakage). * Focus on Video Recognizing that education is leading way for mainstream multimedia, EduQuest Models Thirty through Fifty amply supply required basic system power, as well as graphics and audio processing punch. The entry-level Model Thirty student station, for example, has 386SLC processor that runs twice as fast as 386SX, graphics chipset and 512K of video memory (VRAM). The Forty and Fifty models are 486SX-based; support an Intel OverDrive processor for even better system performance; and sport local bus video, more VRAM, different graphics chipset and GUI accelerator. For motion video, Forty and Fifty models' graphics subsystems support DVI and analog video applications. Their two serial ports connect multiple I/O devices, while built-in SCSI controller daisy-chains multiple external SCSI devices and also handles optional internal CD-ROM drive. * Programmable DSP Audio Another first, all EduQuest models can be equipped with an EduQuest Audio Card boasting DSP. …" @default.
