- W1836694738 abstract "Since the major leads to the etiology of cancer come from epidemiology, the epidemiology of colon cancer is reviewed at some length. From this, certain leads to the etiology of colon cancer emerge, principally the role of diet; an attempt is made to unravel the conflicting reports on the role of diet in colon cancer, and this leads into the two major postulates on this disease - the fiber theory of Burkitt and the steroid fat theory of myself and Wynder. These will be discussed and compared in detail. Most of the work on colon cancer is with animals; this will be reviewed and discussed mainly in terms of its relevance to human cancer rather than to veterinary medicine. The review will be concluded with a summary of the current situation and an indication of the reviewer's views on the most likely directions of advance in the near future. There is strong evidence to link the incidence of colon cancer to the fecal concentration of bile acids; there is also evidence to incriminate the NDH clostridia. In the absence of any alternative, most research into the etiology of colon cancer has centered on the role of gut bacteria and bile acids, and both major theories on the etiology of the disease accept a major role for these two factors. The fiber theory attempts to relate the incidence of the disease to the amount of dietary fiber by suggesting that the transit time of material through the gut is of paramount importance. The fat theory suggests that the concentration of bile acids in the large intestine is the most important factor. The weight of evidence is strongly in favor of the fat theory, but this may be due in part to the fact that much of the experimental evidence was gathered in studies which had such a link as their basic premise. The epidemiological data are also strongly in favor of the Fat theory." @default.
