- W1837742512 abstract "Motor neurone disease (MND) is a neurodegenerative condition, which is characterised by a progressive muscle weakening. As the disease progresses, many patients will experience respiratory insufficiency, which is the main cause of death in MND. Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and/or invasive ventilation (IV) via a tracheostomy can be used to palliate these distressing respiratory symptoms and maintain quality of life (QOL). The aim of this literature review is to establish whether the use of artificial ventilation improves and/or maintains QOL. Additional objectives of this review are to evaluate contemporary primary research investigating the impact of mechanical ventilation on QOL in MND and to identify any disadvantages of mechanical ventilation and how these could be overcome in future practice. The use of NIV/IV in MND has both positive and negative effects on overall QOL. More comprehensive research needs to be conducted to establish how optimal QOL can be maintained despites the progressive nature of MND." @default.
