- W183882144 abstract "It is proposed that in some cases of leukemia, in which blast cells are present in circulating blood, extracorporeal irradiation of blood may have therapeutic benefit. By sterilizing a significant portion of these blast cells, which may return to bone marrow and proliferate, leukemic metastases may be diminished. It was calculated that in leukemia, approximates 1% of blast cells are exchanged per min between the marrow and peripheral blood which is equivalent to a 63% exchange of the cells in 2 hr. By means of a Co/sup 60/ source it would be possibie to sterilize all cells making one passage through a circulation unit which would draw blood from the femoral vein, for example, and return it via antecubital vein. An 8-hr irradiation of blood passing through the loop would sterilize 99% of the whole blast cell population; however, the remaining 1% of cells would be expected to cause recurrence of leukemia. Extracorporeal irradiation was attempted in 2 leukemia patients; the course of the disease was not influenced, but no untoward effects were noted. The biood was circulated in coils through a 100-c Co/sup 60/ source which gave an average dose rate to the coils of 1000 rad/min. At amore » flow rate of 400 ml/min. each blood ceii received 250 rad, or 7500 rad after the 6-hr circulation period. The 2 patients studies were not ideal subjects for testing the technique since they had relatively few circulating biast cells; therefore, it is suggested that further trials of extracorporeal irradiation of blood be conducted.
