- W18394079 abstract "RATIONALE: Artificial selection of animals by endurance treadmill running has been used to establish divergent rat lines (HCR/LCR), presuming that the selection identifies a capacity to run. Treadmill running in rats is typically not voluntary, and may unintentionally be selecting for perseverance and other behavioral traits, rather than exercise capacity. PURPOSE: Test the hypothesis that artificial selection for endurance running has a behavioral element, in addition to traditional exercise capacity measures. METHODS: Four groups of animals (LCR males, LCR females, HCR males, HCR females, n = 10 each) were examined in three different behavioral tests (the Porsolt forced swim test (perseverance), the elevated plus maze (anxiety), and a 1–12 point semi-quantitative handling test (aggressiveness)). RESULTS: There were not significant differences between males and females within a strain for any test. Phenotypic differences in all tests were observed. HCR animals persevered longer than LCRs in the forced swim test (378 ± 18 vs 189 ± 19 secs; p < 0.05), were less likely to explore the open arms of the plus maze (31 ± 8 vs 126 ± 11 secs; p < 0.05), and were more aggressive in response to handling (6.1 ± 0.9 vs 1.7 ± 0.4; p< 0.05). CONCLUSION: Selection for endurance running also significantly selected for perseverance, aggressiveness, and anxiety. The relative importance of these factors to overall performance is unclear." @default.
