- W1844705128 abstract "ABSTRACT The Frasnian succession of West Central Alberta is characterized by third order (1-10 m.a.), transgressive-regressive (T/R), depositional cycles, represented by the Beaverhill Lake, Woodbend and Winterburn Groups. Fourth- and fifth-order shallowing upward cycles can be recognized within these T/R cycles. Time correlations between Frasnian carbonate platform and basinal sediments are established by combining sedimentology and conodont biostratigraphy. The depositional history for the Frasnian in the Nordegg area is interpreted and illustrated on cross-sections and paleogeographic maps. Carbonate deposition began with the flooding of the West Alberta Arch and the deposition of the upper Swan Hills Formation during the Lower asymmetrica Zone. Transgression in the Middle asymmetrica Zone initiated the basinal Cline Channel and Duvernay Formation shale deposition, while the time equivalent Cooking Lake Formation was deposited on the drowned Swan Hills platform. The overlying lower Leduc Formation shows backstepping and aggradational reef margin stacking patterns. Maximum relief from the carbonate platform to surrounding Duvernay Formation shale during the Upper asymmetrica Zone was 100 m. Aggradation and backstepping was repeated in the Ancyrognathus triangularis Zone, with syndepositional relief reaching 170 m at the Wapiabi Gap reef margin. Platform-margin profiles were controlled by physical factors such as dominant wind direction and currents. On the Ram Range the margin backstepped, but then aggraded at Cripple Creek. At Wapiabi Gap, to the north on the Bighorn Range, the margin was dominantly aggradational. Ireton Formation shale deposition was also influenced by currents. In the Lower gigas Zone, the Leduc carbonate platform reached a maximum syndepositional relief of 220 m. A change from dominantly biohermal to biostromal platform margins occurred. A prograding wedge of Ireton Formation shale filled much of the relief in the Cline Channel, while the upper Leduc platform was drowned. Finally, the progradational Nisku Formation was deposited during the Upper gigas Zone. RESUME La succession frasnienne du centre-ouest de l'Alberta est caracterisee par des cycles sedimentaires transgressifsregressifs (T/R) de troisieme ordre (1-10 m.a.), representes par les groupes Beaverhill Lake, Woodbend et Winterburn. Des cycles de quatrieme et cinquieme ordre dont la granulometrie augmente vers le haut (shallowing upwards cycles) peuvent etre reconnus a l'interieur de ces cycles T/R. Des correlations-temps entre les sediments de la plate-forme carbonatee et les sediments du bassin frasniens sont etablies en combinant la sedimentologie et la biostratigraphie des conodontes. L'histoire sedimentaire du Frasnien dans la region de Nordegg est interpretee et illustree sur des coupes transversales et des cartes paleogeographiques. L'accumulation des sediments carbonates debuta avec l'inondation de l'arche West-Alberta et le depot de la partie superieure de la formation Swan Hills durant la partie inferieure de la zone asymmetrica. Une transgression durant la partie intermediaire de la zone asymmetrica fut a l'origine du chenal de Cline (forme dans le bassin) et du depot des schistes argileux de la formation Duvernay, tandis que la formation Cooking Lake, equivalente dans le temps, fut deposee sur la plate-forme Swan Hills noyee. La partie inferieure de la formation Leduc sus-jacente demontre des schemes de migration des facies vers la terre (backstepping) et d'aggradation de marges de recifs. Le relief maximum entre la plate-forme carbonatee et le schiste argileux de la formation Duvernay environnante durant la partie superieure de la zone asymmetrica etait de 100 metres. L'aggradation et la migration vers la terre furent repetees durant la zone Ancyrognathus triangularis, avec un relief synsedimentaire allant jusqu'a 170 metres a la marge de recif Wapiabi Gap. End_Page 1-------------------------- Les profils de marge de plate-forme ont ete controles par des facteurs d'ordre physique, tels que la direction dominante du vent et les courants. Dans la chaine Ram la marge migra vers la terre, mais ensuite alluvionna au ruisseau Cripple. A Wapiabi Gap, au nord dans la chaine Bighorn, la marge etait surtout en aggradation. Le depot de schistes argileux de la formation Ireton fut aussi influence par les courants. Dans la partie inferieure de la zone gigas, la plate-forme carbonatee Leduc atteignit un relief synsedimentaire maximum de 220 metres. Un changement se produisit, de marges de plate-forme dominees par des biohermes a celles dominees par des biostromes. Un biseau progressant vers la mer, forme de schistes argileux de la formation Ireton, remblaya une bonne partie du relief dans le chenal de Cline, tandis que la partie superieure de la plate-forme Leduc fut noyee.
