- W18448892 abstract "Psychoacoustically-measured auditory filters broaden as the level at which they are measured increases, but it is not yet known whether this change is primarily dependent on the level of the probe or of the masker. Although most measurements using notched- and comb-filtered noise have fixed the masker level in assessing the properties of a single auditory filter, we give three reasons to believe that the level of the probe should be kept constant. Firstly, a constant masker level implies that it is the level of the input to the filter which determines filter shape. If this were so, then maskers remotely high in frequency from the filter being measured should affect filter parameters, an effect which seems unlikely given what is known about masking. Secondly, at least one extant model of auditory filtering which appears to account well for many nonlinear aspects has its filter shape determined primarily by the level of the probe. Finally, we have developed a new method of fitting filter shapes to notched-noise data in which filter parameters depend explicitly on signal level (either probe or masker). Applying this technique to a set of notched-noise data in which both fixed-probe and fixed-masker paradigms have been used at a range of levels, we find that models in which filter parameters depend on probe level are much more successful in accounting for the data than those in which filter parameters depend upon masker level." @default.
