- W1845540180 abstract "The overall aim of this exciting new project was to exploit and develop a novel hyperspectral dataset that had been successfully acquired over Adelaide Island in February 2011. The integration of airborne spectral reflectance and spectral emissivity data was used to address diverse geological mapping and vegetation monitoring problems of immediate interest to scientists working in the Antarctic, producing results that demonstrate the potential benefits of the hyperspectral remote sensing mapping methods to all physical scientists. The predicted benefits are numerous, but include more accurate, time-efficient and cost-efficient geological mapping (including better documentation of volcanic rocks and landforms) and characterisation of vegetation cover extent and type (including new techniques to monitor change and introduced species). To achieve the overall project aim, the following objectives were identified:1: To develop geological mapping algorithms, which discriminate surface materials through their spectral reflectance, spectral emissivity and topographic signatures, to a diverse range of geological settings including basement rocks, volcanic rocks and sedimentary rocks.2: To characterise and quantify the proportional component of the spectral response attributed to vegetation and other surface materials.3: To implement geological mapping algorithms to incorporate intelligent mapping approaches such as spectral unmixing and rule-based classification.Specific achievements from the project include:•Production of a comprehensive database of field-based measurements of spectral emissivity and reflectance response from a representative range of volcanic and sedimentary samples and sites•The development of Temperature-Emissivity Separation (TES) algorithms •The correlation of emissivity in processed images to lithology. (Silicates with sheet, chain, and isolated tetrahedral structure show minimum emissivity at progressively longer wavelengths)•The data were closely correlated with the related Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) study to unmix the proportion of the spectral response caused by vegetation covering the rock surface•The project was always intended as a pilot project and it has already lead to a NERC-funded PhD studentship which started in October 2012 jointly with Hull University•A NERC standard grant submission is in progress and is being developed for submission in July 2013 based on the early results of this pilot study•The work was recognized at a recent Remote Sensing meeting (RSPSoc), winning best poster prize and commendations of the treatment of this excellent dataset•Potential savings in future geological campaigns if remote sensing techniques can be developed further" @default.
