- W184570224 abstract "The presence of previous literary material in a later text is common among writers of all periods. Herman Meyer states that literature is nou rished by literature. He continues: Whether he is oriented toward tradi tion or against tradition, the writer is concerned with the management of a cultural inheritance that he himself absorbs, preserves, and passes along.1 Just how and to what purpose an author builds on existing material, literary or otherwise, has been a principal focus of recent studies in literary criticism. Meyer's rather vague term nourishment, as well as slightly more specific notions of allusion, influence, or affinity, have generally given way to the current concept of intertextuality. Even here critics do not agree on a single definition,2 but it is worthwhile pursuing the notion of intertextuality in a given author to expand our undertstanding of that writer's work and its place in literary history. A case in point is the work of Ram?n Hern?ndez. This Spanish writer of highly experimental, original novels has drawn on diverse sources for his characters, themes, and imagery. Extraneous elements in Hern?ndez' novels may take the intra-referential form of incorporating titles, characters or scenes of his own works into a later text, such as F?bula de la ciudad and Pido la muerte al rey, to name only two examples.3 The inter referential presence of other authors' visions or works may also appear, so that, for example, the reader with a broad literary background easily recognizes Lautr?amont's character Maldoror in Invitado a morir? Of particular significance for this study are the works of Vladimir Nabokov. One acquainted with the works of this Russian writer may" @default.
