- W1846191467 abstract "In the scope of the project Digital Inclusion and Participation: Comparing the trajectories of digital media use by majority and disadvantaged groups in Portugal and the USA (2009-2011” (UTAustin/CD/016/2008), in this article we seek to characterize the uses, by young people and their families in Portugal, of the media for contact, information and entertainment purposes, so as to understand the forms of inclusion through digital media by different populations beyond the access/non-access. Our theoretical background is offered by Livingstone and Helsper (2007) and Peter and Valkerburg (2006), and we then problematize the inequalities of access and use of digital media by children and their families, to debate the potentialities and limitations of communicative, leisure and informative uses for their inclusion in digital media and, through them, for the intergenerational integration. The analysis of the different types of uses among the sample allows us to demonstrate the differences in the use of the digital media, from which we derive conclusions, especially concerning the need for a media education as a way to ensure an effective inclusion." @default.
