The control of embryonic development is a complex process. During embryonic development of most species, groups of cells proliferate and change their relative position. Cell movements are essential in the formation of the body plan; they also permit inductive interactions through the transient contact between groups of cells located far apart in the embryo. The chapter describes distinct modes of displacements: cells can migrate singly through the extracellular matrix (ECM) or as a solid epithelial sheet that folds, invaginates, or expands. The comprehension of the molecular mechanisms that control the migratory behavior of cells during embryogenesis provides the basic information needed to tackle several pathological situations encountered during embryonic development—such as craniofacial malformations—as well as during adult life. The chapter discusses striking cases in which deciphering the mechanism of cell locomotion leads to rapid progress—namely, the processes of metastasis formation and that of tissue regeneration and repair." @default.
