- W1850730683 abstract "One of cultural properties Africans preserve is to create new cultural elements whilst maintaining their cultural boundaries. Africa has a long cultural history of adapting and modifying alien cultural elements, and merging into African cultures. I attempt in this paper to show this cultual hybridity between African divination and Capitalism. To specify the argument, I present a case study conducted in Msinga, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Msinga is a typical rural area of South Africa. Majority of residents work as labourers, shopkeepers and small businessmen. Local population tries to maintain its customary norm and values, nevertheless, the influence of capitalism is wide spread at the same time. In religious context, local population largely relies on its own belief systems: ancestral worship and fear of devil. A diviner is received as a mediator between these two spiritual beings. However, majority of the local residents are Christians which reject ‘customary’ elements of belief systems. Capitalism has massive impact on the everyday life in Msinga. Religions have no exception from that impact. A diviner is a focal figure of capitalised religious environments. In this paper, I try to show that the diviner, customarily known as a guardian of community, is in another sense, a renovator or an entrepreneur to accumulate an individual achievement. (S)he utilises divining niches, such as, elements of belief systems, and imports alien religious aspects, such as, Christianity. I show that by importing a Christian angel, isithunyua, into divining environments, the diviner strengthens its divining power which is a crucial spiritual capital for divining business." @default.
