- W1852522182 abstract "This chapter studies the stages in the ontogeny of the pineal organ of the newt Taricha torosa by means of electron microscopy. Ultrastructural evidence, combined with physiological experiments, adequately distinguishes the primarily photoreceptive pineal organs of cold-blooded vertebrates from the avian and mammalian systems where some form of secretion appears to be the main role. These observations support the hypothesis that the organ differentiates in a progressive fashion as new cells are supplied to it from a proliferation zone in the pineal neck connecting with the brain roof. Morphological evidence of a continued potential for photoreceptive activity is found in the organ throughout larval life in spite of the progressive obliteration of the lumen resulting from the flattening of the organ as a whole during later larval stages. Beyond metamorphosis, however, it appears that much or all photoreceptive potential is lost because the adult organ displays many degenerated photoreceptor outer segments and acquires a cytology dominated by supportive cells. The chapter discusses the possibility of secondary functions, such as secretion, in view of this evidence, and compares the ultrastructure of the newt pineal system with that of the frog." @default.
