- W1854690417 abstract "The peripheral blood of 223 antepartum patients was examined for the presence of fetal erythrocytes by the use of a modified Kleihauer technique. Fetal cells were demonstrated in the circulation of 121 an incidence of 54.3 per cent. No statistically significant relationship could be found between the incidence of transplacental hemorrhage and the maternal age, parity, previous abortions, ABO or Rh blood types, or the period of gestation. A significant statistical correlation did exist between the estimated average volume of fetal blood and the length of gestation. Patients having greater than 0.5 c.c. of fetal blood present were scattered through the sample but the frequency of occurrence was too small to analyze statistically. From this study there does not appear to be a stage of pregnancy in which there is a peak risk for the occurrence of a significant transplacental hemorrhage, except that this is more likely to result as pregnancy progresses." @default.
