- W185646749 abstract "The famous Spanish philosopher Unamuno once said that he could not understand why one wanted to be someone else.1 He expressed by these words a significant value of aristocratic-intellectual European subculture. His compatriot Ortega y Gasset sounded a similar note when decrying the appearance of the modern mass culture and its product?the mass man.2 Probably sociology as a study of groups could not have been developed in such a cultural climate. If the United States is a good example of modern mass civilization, it is not surprising that the science of groups and masses is being cul tivated especially in this country. The theory of reference group is then a good example of our different cultural orientation as compared to Unamuno's. In subsequent paragraphs we shall first attempt to make the concept of reference group more precise. Secondly, we shall apply the concept to a concrete Polish-American group in which the author participated as a fellow-worker. Surveying the use of the concept, Sherif has pointed out that the term reference group might become a magic phrase to explain anything and everything concerning group relations.3 Shibutani, in seeking to clarify the concept, differentiated between three usages: the reference group as (1) points of comparison in evaluating one's own status, (2) the group in which the actor aspires to gain or maintain acceptance, (3) that group whose perspective constitutes the frame of reference of the actor.4 The third usage is then recommended by Shibutani as the most adequate one." @default.
