- W1857087130 abstract "This chapter draws attention to the characterization and identification of victims and human remains from mass disasters by DNA-based methods. The development of the polymerase chain reaction had a major impact on the field of human identification in cases involving living or deceased people. Even a certain degree of DNA degradation was likely to be neglected by the analysis of small polymorphic regions (short tandem repeats, or STRs) widely distributed all around the genome. The availability of this new analytical approach contributes to the development of strategies that permit the identification of decomposed corpses and fragmentary human remains, often “by-products” of mass disasters. This is possible by the comparison of their genetic profiles with their putative relatives. In concordance with the catastrophes, DNA-based identification approaches and multi-laboratory facilities are needed. Currently, high-throughput platforms are efficiently powering a modern investigation of such disasters. Molecular diagnosis based on DNA-typing approaches has undergone an intense evolutionary process that might efficiently respond to the intensely demanding victim identification needs imposed by extreme mass catastrophes that unfortunately characterize this age." @default.
