- W1858746468 abstract "This chapter describes the diversity of larval stages and the patterns of development in echinoids and reviews the ecological challenges that echinoplutei face along with the physiological, morphological, developmental, and behavioral solutions utilized to respond to those problems. Most echinoids are free spawners that produce vast numbers of small, yolk-poor eggs that develop into feeding planktonic larvae known as “echinoplutei.” Echinoids have simple life cycles, and reproduction is confined to the adult stages. The developmental patterns in echinoderms are described using three characters: (1) mode of nutrition (planktotrophic or lecithotrophic), (2) habitat (pelagic or benthic), and (3) type of morphogenesis. Echinoids have provided important insights into the evolutionary ecology of reproductive strategies and the developmental patterns of larvae. Because early echinoid embryos are highly regulative, blastomere isolation experiments can be used to test hypotheses about the consequences of different egg sizes on larval function and performance. Reductions in egg size result in smaller early-stage larvae and slower development through the early larval stages; however, the reductions do not affect the size or development rate of later larvae or the size of the post-metamorphic juveniles. The chapter also discusses the processes that affect planktonic larvae and influence the abundance of adult echinoids." @default.
