- W1860097 abstract "The use of simulation is system design is hampered by the problem of verifying that the simulation and the model it exemplifies properly represent the system being simulated. Proving properties of a simulation as a means of defending behavioral assertions about the simulated system (validation) is difficult for the normal user if he or she is a programmer/analyst and not a statistician. A formal flowchart model for discrete event simulation programs is developed as a vehicle for the solution of these problems.Techniques are introduced to verify formalized simulation programs against sequential machine specifications by relating the to a structural description of the system to be simulated. It is shown that discrete event specifications, popular vehicles for system description, are realizable by the usual discrete time system formalism of automata theory. A discrete event simulation of a discrete deterministic system is shown to be a formal object whose fidelity to the system can be proved. This is effected by constructing a homomorphism from an operational model of the discrete event simulation to the discrete event specification (DEVS) restricted to a countable time line.A discrete event simulation of a discrete stochastic system is shown to be a formal object whose statistical fidelity to the system can be proved. This is effected by the construction of a covering homomorphism whose domain is the associated stochastic sequential machine of the ergodic machine characterizing the discrete event simulation and whose range is a stochastic discrete event specification (SDEVS)--the discrete event version of stochastic sequential machines. The covering homomorphism is shown to be equivalent to a restricted type of homomorphism between the characterizing ergodic machine and a canonical ergodic machine constructed from the SDEVS. The role of the ergodic machine formalism in linking deterministic realizations to stochastic specifications is explored. The completeness of the technique is proved, and examples are given.A method of simulation and system validation is presented which substitutes techniques of program verification for statistical testing. Possible implementation alternatives and examples are discussed. The technique is illustrated by developing and applying a sound Hoare-like axiom system for formalized discrete event simulation programs. The problems of random numbers and of automating the and validation techniques are also discussed." @default.
