- W1860329963 abstract "The enzymatic activities are subdivided into two broad categories, those that required to ensure that the nucleic acid of the virus is both transcribed and replicated accurately and efficiently and those that needed to ensure that virus encoded proteins are processed and modified appropriately. The absence of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase activities in eukaryotic cells dictates that all RNA-containing viruses must encode the transcriptase/polymerase activity needed to transcribe and replicate their genomes. In the case of DNA viruses the extent to which the virus relies on the transcription and replication machinery of the cell is governed largely by the size of the viral genome and the sub-cellular localization of the transcription process. The enzymes encoded by viruses are subdivided into those associated with nucleic acid metabolism and those involved in processing/modifying proteins, and each of these subdivisions is further divided into activities found in both the purified virion and virus infected cell and those restricted to the infected cell. These subdivisions form a convenient basis to categorize the various virus-encoded enzyme activities and are used in this chapter to simplify the description of the enzyme assays." @default.
