- W1860895670 abstract "Morphogenesis Is the process whereby cell movements, changes in cell shape and cell-cell interactions result in the formation of tissues and organs in the embryo. Beginning with the work of Vogt (1929), who traced the complex movements of cells during gastrulation, and the discovery that the dorsal lip of the blastopore moving underneath the overlying ectoderm was responsible for induction of the nervous system during gastrulation (Spemann and Mangold, 1924), the importance of morphogenetlc cell movements for the shaping and patterning of the embryo has become increasingly evident (see Gurdon, 1987; Gustafson and Wolpert, 1963; Holtfreter, 1968; Holtfreter and Hamburger, 1955). However, little is known concerning the forces which set in motion or control these dynamic processes, although a variety of basic cellular mechanisms have been implicated. This chapter reviews evidence that neurotransmitter substances, in particular serotoinin (5-HT) may be involved in the regulation of some morphogenetic processes in neural and non-neural tissues." @default.
