- W1862087130 abstract "ABSTRACT A number of salt tectonic structures, pillows and diapirs, occur in the Fort Norman area, Northwest Territories. The structures are cored mainly by salt from the Upper Cambrian Saline River Formation and to a lesser extent by little-known salt from the Lower/Middle Cambrian Mount Cap Formation. Salt flow occurred during at least three, and possibly five, periods of time, and most structures experienced two or more salt tectonic phases. Well-documented phases include: post-Devonian - pre-Turonian; Late Cretaceous; and post Cretaceous (including post-Paleocene). Cambrian and pre-Devonian phases are deduced from equivocal data, and may have been related to epeirogenic events along the Keele Tectonic Zone. The pre-Turonian event was compressional and possibly related to Jurrassic/Cretaceous compressional orogenesis in the cordillera. Post-Cretaceous salt tectonics were at least in part related to Laramide compressional tectonics that produced the Franklin Mountains. One Late Cretaceous diapir has no clear relationship to regional tectonic events. The largest salt structure, the multi-phase Gambill Diapir, probably localized right-lateral strike-slip displacements during the Laramide orogeny. Hydrocarbon exploration possibilities include essentially untested thick Lower and Middle Cambrian strata, possible basal sands at the sub-Devonian unconformity, and Paleozoic carbonate reservoirs in contact with Cretaceous source beds. RESUME Plusieurs structures de tectonique saline, coussins et diapirs, se presentent dans la region de Fort Norman, dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest. Ces structures sont noyautees surtout par du sel de la Formation de Saline River du Cambrien superieur, et dans une moindre ampleur par du sel peu connu de la Formation de Mount Cap du Cambrien inferieur/moyen. L'ecoulement du sel s'est produit durant au moins trois, sinon possiblement cinq periodes de temps et la plupart des structures ont subi 2 phases ou plus de tectonique saline. Ces phases sont bien documentees et incluent: post-Devonien-pre-Turonien; Cretace superieur; et post-Cretace (incluant le post-Paleocene). Les phases du Cambrien et du pre-Devonien sont deduites a partir de donnees equivoques, et pourraient etre reliees aux evenements epirogeniques trouves le long de la zone tectonique de Keele. Les evenements pre-Turoniens etaient en compression et possiblement relies aux orogeneses en compression dans la Cordillere. Les tectoniques salines post-Cretace ont ete au moins en partie reliees aux tectoniques de compression de Laramide qui ont produit les monts Franklin. Un diapir du Cretace superieur ne montre pas de relation claire avec les evenements tectoniques regionaux. La structure saline la plus etendue, le diapir multi-phase de Gambill, a probablement localise le rejet de decrochements dextres durant l'orogenie Laramide. Les cibles possibles d'exploration pour les hydrocarbures comprennent des strates essentiellement non-testees et epaisses du Cambrien inferieur et moyen, de possibles gres de base sis sur la discordance sub-devonienne, et des reservoirs de carbonate du Paleozoique en contact avec des roches sources du Cretace.
