- W1863078408 abstract "Publisher Summary The chapter discusses a method for assessing viability following exposure to ionizing radiation, but with slight modification these protocols may be used to define the lethal effects of any chemical or physical agent on most cultured microbes. Since the dose, response curve delineates a mathematical relationship between the extent of exposure (the dose applied) and viability, it provides a means of directly comparing the resistance of populations and estimating the statistical relevance of that comparison. Ionizing radiation resistance, the ability to survive exposure to high doses of X- and gamma rays, is a characteristic shared by a relatively small number of prokaryotes that presumably have heightened ability to withstand the lethal effects of that exposure. The reasons for enhanced radio resistance among the other species listed are unknown, but it is assumed that these mechanisms involve enhanced deoxyribo nucleic acid (DNA) repair capacity and/or the ability to passively prevent radiation induced damage from occurring in vivo . The chapter describes the generation of a survival curve by conducting a preliminary study in which dose range in which some portion of the population remains viable are determined." @default.
