- W186535985 abstract "Children (n = 463) indicated their preference for folk melodies with sequenced accompaniments. Third- and fourth-grade listeners represented an upper-middle-class suburban school district and a lower- middle-class urban district in same American city. Selections were recorded from an electronic keyboard sequencer, featuring piano sound for melody with automatic accompaniments. Melodies included London Bridge, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Shoo Fly, Yankee Doodle, and This Old Man, latter two because of prominence on television program, & Friends. Accompaniments ranged from rock to traditional styles, including one simple chordal accompaniment with piano timbre. Two versions of survey investigated responses to song-style combinations. Children responded to most selections positively, with urban district listeners more positive overall. Rock-based styles were most preferred for both groups. Listeners from districts responded differentially to various styles. Both populations responded negatively to the song, but suburban students were especially negative. Listeners associated certain styles with program & Friends, and some perceived all selections as a new genre: Barney style. Data support using music sequencers in teaching settings, while raising other questions regarding effects of media on music responses." @default.
