- W186718035 abstract "In recent years the Holocaust has come to assume major role in the political culture both of Israel and of Diaspora Jewry. This centrality in the case of Israel is scarcely surprising in view of the proximity of its foundation to the massacre of Europe's Jews.1 To begin with, the presence of many survivors and their relatives in Israel's population made it unlikely that initial efforts to repress the memory of the Holocaust would succeed. Moreover, continuing Arab hostility and Israel's sense of isolation in the last 20 years have reinforced what would have remained massive trauma even in the best of circumstances.2 This omnipresent linkage has grown ever more pervasive since 1967, strengthening the emotional bonds between Israel and the Diaspora and reinforcing the feeling in Israeli Jewry of belonging to unique people among the nations.3 The institutionalisation of the Holocaust in Israel and its status as kind of civil religion are not, however, without problems. It stands in opposition to classical Zionism, which aimed at normalising the status of the Jews, not at perpetuating the concept of a people that dwells alone.4 Political Zionism sought to positively transform Gentile attitudes to Jews, not to dwell on the eternal antagonism between Jews and Gentiles; it aimed at economic and political independence, not at playing on the guilt of the nations as justification for expecting favourable treatment or immunity from criticism." @default.
