- W186725818 abstract "The purposes of the present study were to develop and validate a scale measure for elementary grade school children. Graduate students generated a sampling of state items, 30 to use in a pilot study and 60 to use in a study to develop and validate this scale. Ratings were obtained on five point scale choices on each of the items from a sample of children in grades 1-5, 50 for the pilot study and 206 for the developmental study. Ratings were obtained in both studies on the CMAS measure of trait anxiety. Separate factor analyses using Principal Components Factor Analysis with Varimax Rotation were used in both studies. Results of the analyses in the developmental study showed 13 factors, 12 of which were defined by state items and 1 factor was uniquely defined by the CMAS test. The state scales from the 12 factors were chosen to comprise the Childrens' measure of state, labeled the Minimood. They were shown internally consistent with Apha reliabilities of .80 or above on all 12 state factors, and both stable and valid across grade levels 1-5. Ten of the 12 factors were similar in content emphasis to those identified in studies of adult state. Childrens' aptitudes and personality traits may markedly influence dieir behavior in the classroom and in other educational settings. However, variability in dieir day-to-day behavior may be due to alterations in labile attributes which may be characterized by states. The study of states, as with other variables categorized as aptitude - treatment interactions, is predicated on the development of measures appropriate to making assessments at the elementary grade levels. The research was designed to: (1) develop adjective items for a state measure labeled the Minimood; (2) provide evidence on the validity and stability of this state measure; and (3) evaluate the possibility that scales of the Minimood may be applied as measures of state anxiety. Background Most research on mood as noted by Lauamala and Laaksonen (2000) are vague, non uniformed, or lack a description for or definition (p.l). The past and current research (e.g., Batra & Ray, 1986; Buckby, Cosgrove, & Killackey, 2007; Dawson, Bloch, & Ridgway, 1990; Hornik, 1993; Wong, Oei, Ang., Lee, Ng, & Leng, 2007; Watson, 1988) delineate by using the various defining characteristics of the emotional/mood states for their criteria. Anxiety measures are also used to determine the state. Many of the commonly used anxiety measures include, the Multidimensional anxiety scale for children (MASC) (March, Parker, Sullivan, Stallings, & Conners, 1997), the revised measure of children's manifest anxiety (Reynolds, & Richmond, 1978), Howarth's Mood Adjective Checklist (HMACL) (Howarth, 1980), and the Mood Adjective Checklist (Mayer, 1986) which are based upon the characteristics of state. Nowlis (1970) defined as a multidimensional set of temporarily reversible dispositions (p. 668). According to Nowlis, moods are monitorings which reflect general patterns of psychobiological functioning and orientation. To study the factors of state, Nowlis and Green (1957, 1961) developed a adjective checklist (MACL) and obtained ratings which were subjected to repeated factor analysis. These analyses led to the identification of twelve factors of state: aggression, anxiety, surgency, elation, concentration, fatigue, vigor or activation, social affection, sadness, skepticism, egoism and nonchalance. Items designative of each of diese factors have been identified in subsequent research (Cattell, 1963; Howardi, 1979, 1980; Lemstra, Neudorf, D'Arcy, Kunst, Warren, & Bennett, 2008; Lubin, 1966; Matthews, & Jones, 1990; McNair and Lorr, 1964; Zuckerman and Lubin, 1965; Morris, 1989; Thayer, 1967, 1989; Yeun, & Shin-Park, 2006). The items used in these more recent studies are appropriate for the assessment of adult states, but due to their complexity and vocabulary level, are not appropriate for measurements on elementary school children. …" @default.
