- W1869640431 abstract "Elimination of the packing materials and the substitution of high-purity fused silica for less inert column materials make it possible to construct analytical systems that can generate data of greater quantitative validity. Open tubular columns (OTCs) offer certain advantages over packed columns, including possibilities for improved separations, shorter analysis times, and higher sensitivities. In spite of open column advantages, packed column has dominated the analytical field because of requirement in modification of instrument and tubing technique of open tubular column. A major development in OTC was the introduction of glass capillary tubings and producing columns from them. These columns are thinner but with greater flexibility. Conventional glass capillaries had two faults: (1) they were fragile and prone to breakage, and (2) they exhibited excessive activity. Therefore, quartz and fused silica glasses are used for making capillary columns." @default.
