- W187002401 abstract "Abstract: Healthcare-acquired infections (HAI) result in significant patient morbidity and mortality. Biofilms are ubiquitous. They represent the dominant form of life on inanimate objects and the surfaces of all living organisms. Routine hygienic measures and extraordinary disinfection can limit the risk posed by microbes but have been found lacking in being able to reduce the incidence of HAI and emergence of resistance to antimicrobials. Recent work has found that when microbes come in direct contact with solid copper surfaces their number and ability to move antibiotic resistance determinants are continuously mitigated. In the latter half of the 19th century Nightingale appreciated that when hospitals were kept clean, deaths from infectious diseases were lower. This chapter will address whether the use of solid copper in hospitals to control bacteria and biofilms represents a transformation to medicine similar in signficance to the observation made by Nightingale." @default.
