- W187335897 abstract "Groundwater flow and contaminant transport through fractured rock systems have received much attention because of proposed potential waste repositories in fractured media. In many hydrostratigraphic units, stress-relief fractures control ground-water movement, and weathered fractures associated with liesegang-banded zones are common. The specific sandstone tested was the Pennsylvanian Breathitt Sandstone of eastern Kentucky. Closely spaced permeability measurements were taken on both weathered fracture surfaces (the fracture skin') and the unaltered rock with an electronic gas minipermeameter of new design. Fracture skin permeability is shown to be about one order of magnitude lower than that of the unaltered rock. Permeability variation on the fracture surface is significantly greater than that in the unaltered sandstone. The variations of permeability and pore structure within the liesegang bands are greater than that either of the fracture skin or within the unaltered rock. This variability is explained by diagenesis. The authors suggest that some of the liesegang structures are the result of channeled flow. Back-scattered electron images and SEM analyses show that Fe in Fe-oxide cement was redistributed in the liesegang bands and that Fe- and Mn-oxides and clay' coats occlude pores on the fracture surface. The low permeability of the fracture skin and the porosity/permeabilitymore » variations within the liesegang bands affect both the adsorptive characteristics and the flow velocity in this doubly porous medium. This implies that low-permeability fracture skins may impede imbitition of water into the sandstone matrix and result in greater fracture flow during recharge events. The authors also predict a more limited attenuation of contaminant transport in double-porosity systems by the process of diffusion from the fractures into the matrix.« less" @default.
