- W1873395232 abstract "T H E biochemical and physiological disturbances of the fetus of the diabetic and prediabetic mother are poorly understood. Elevated carbon dioxide tension ( pCOZ) with a depressed pH and a somewhat elevated CO, content have been described in the cord blood of these infants.7-12~ I4 The elevated fetal blood CO, could result from an elevated maternal arterial pC0,. Maternal arterial pC0, falls about 10 mm. Hg during normal pregnancy.l* 5 A failure of the arterial pC0, to fall in the diabetic patient during pregnancy could result in a higher pC0, in the blood of the fetus. Therefore alveolar pC0, was determined in pregnant diabetic patients and in appropriate control subjects. This provided a measure of the pC0, of the arterial blood supplying the uterus, for in the subject with normal lungs and without cardiac shunts the value for alveolar pC0, is identical with that in arterial blood.2l 4" @default.
