- W187356978 abstract "Certain Christian traditions emphasize being born again as the beginning point of the journey. Erikson's stages of development provide a lens or metaphor with which to engage this imagery of development. Juxtaposing this metaphor of new birth with Erikson's developmental stages allows one to envision a set of growth stages and the beliefs and behaviors that characterize these stages. It allows leaders and caregivers to identify when and how individuals that emphasize this tradition might be stuck in their development and suggests ways to help them toward positive resolution of the various crises that can characterize development visualized this way. The literature on the role of spirituality in clinical work continues to expand in several directions. On the one hand authors Richards and Bergin (1997) have pointed to the need for understanding the wide array of differences even among those from the same religious tradition. In their book, A Spiritual Strategy for Counseling and Psychotherapy, they discuss the place of specific approaches in therapy, and edited a follow-up book (Richards & Bergin, 2000) that attempted to spell out what such approaches might look like. On the other hand, counselors and therapists have shown a renewed interest in the place of or religious development for clinical work (Miller, 2003; Sperry & Shafranske, 2005) with numerous models of development being adapted to therapeutic work over the last decade (cf. Frame, 2003; Lownsdale, 1997; Rizzuto, 2005). This article grew out of reflections on emphases that characterize certain aspects of conservative, evangelical Christianity and might be considered a contribution both to the emerging literature on denominationally sensitive clinical work and to reflections on the nature of development. More specifically, it looks at those Christian traditions that emphasize being born again as the beginning point of the journey and seeks to engage this imagery of development by juxtaposing this metaphor of new birth with Erikson's developmental stages. Although there is a certain speculative quality to this approach, it has a heuristic value for those who work with this population. It contributes to the literature in two ways. First, although several authors have explored development as a gradual process having certain parallels with Erikson's description of human development (e.g., learning to trust one's primary caregivers has parallels to one's sense of the trustworthiness of God or the universe) (Balswick, King & Reimer, 2005; Fuller, 1988; Gleason, 1975; Loder, 1998; Wright, 1982) no one has sought to systematically explore how such thinking might change when considering the adolescent or adult convert, who although developmentally at later psychosocial stages, could be thought of as a spiritual infant. What stages of development might one pass through following a new birth? What issues might arise at each stage and what characteristics might define the stages? Second, this article raises questions about the role of caregivers in the life of the new convert. While Erikson's developmental model has been used in a variety of ways to help therapists understand the or religious development of their clients (Aden, 1992; Gleason, 1975; Griffith & Griggs, 2001; Linn, Fabricant, & Linn, 1988; Phillips, 1992), not much has been written on how authority figures, including therapists who work with religious issues, might use Erikson's model to reflect on their own role in contributing to and nurturing development in such clients. How might caregivers discern the issues that belong to each developmental stage and provide the atmosphere and opportunities for growth? Those who serve as pastors, mentors or coaches, therapists, or guides or directors for such clients should find the reflections here beneficial. …" @default.
