- W1877527955 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of recent advances in the field of photoemission. On surveying the research efforts in the field of photoemission, it may be said that investigations are vigorously being pursued along the lines of the knowledge of modern solid-state physics. The hope may thus be entertained that fresh technical progress may be achieved in the field of photocathodes. In the last few years, interest has been concentrated on the conditions for photoemission from metals and semiconductors in the vacuum ultraviolet; and the behavior of compound photocathodes in the glow discharge. It may be assumed that the results achieved in the field of photoemission are, to a certain extent, likely to influence semiconductor physics, in that, for instance, the photoelectrical measurement promises to become a very powerful research tool. Even at this state, exact measurements of photoemission, in conjunction with measurements of photoconductivity and optical absorption, can be employed for an extensive clarification of band structure. The chapter discusses the emission of photoelectrons from metals in semiconductors, photoemission from metals and semiconductors in the vacuum ultraviolet, behavior of compound photocathodes in the glow discharge, and the surface and volume photoeffects." @default.
