- W18785097 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the multivariate discrimination of depressive groups across cultures. The last three decades have shown important changes in the nosological concept of depression. The unitary perspective postulates the homogeneity of the depressive states as a group was represented by Mapother and Lewis in England and by Adolf Meyer in the United States. Since then, vigorous clinical research has been proposing mostly a pluralistic concept of depression in which different etiologies and responses to treatment may be related to different clinical subgroupings. Among the pluralistic perspectives on depression, the endogenous-psychotic versus neurotic and the unipolar versus bipolar depressive dichotomies have received attention in the literature. The nosological separation of endogenous and neurotic depressive types is a long-standing controversial issue, the clarification of which has been slowed down by the frequent use of inappropriate methodology." @default.
