- W1878835041 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the adverse effects of penicillins, cephalosporins, and other β-lactam antibiotics. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is an immunologically induced inflammation of the lung parenchyma, resulting from repeated inhalation of a variety of causal agents, including organic dusts and simple chemicals. Characteristically, patients intermittently exposed to antigen develop dyspnea and fever a few hours after antigen exposure. In an effect opposite to that of the penicillins, four cephalosporins, given to rabbits, increased the renal clearance of methotrexate. The effect is explained by inhibition of tubular reabsorption of methotrexate Nafcillin is a semisynthetic penicillin that is as active against penicillinase producing Staphylococcus aureus as methicillin. Unlike methicillin, however, only isolated cases of nafcillin-induced interstitial nephritis have been reported. Loracarbef is the first of the carbacephem class of β-lactam and it has already been extensively reviewed. The only difference from cefaclor is that the sulfur atom at position 1 of the dihydrothiazone ring in cefaclor has been replaced with a carbon in loracarbef. It is an oral β-lactam intended to be used in the treatment of mild to moderate infections, and has the same safety profile as other orally administered β-lactam." @default.
