- W1880652286 abstract "This chapter discusses the use of genetically based methods and resources such as mice with genetic aberrations to study programmed cell death (PCD) during development. The chapter provides an overview of the tissues in which and the times at which PCD has been observed in normal mouse development. Several examples are discussed in detail to illustrate key functions of PCD. The chapter discusses the techniques currently being used to detect cell death in situ in embryonic tissues or in isolated populations of cells and identifies the feature of the dying cells on which each technique is based. A list of genes that are known or are strongly suspected to play a role in cell death in vitro or in vivo, followed by the specific roles some of these genes may play in cell death are described. Such genes are excellent candidates for functional analysis by means of misexpression, overexpression, or knockout experiments in transgenic mice. Transgenic mice that have been characterized as having cell death-related abnormalities and strategies utilizing the mutant and transgenic mice are described." @default.
