Oligosaccharides, attached to protein by way of an asparagine-N-acetylglucosamine (Asn-GlcNAc) linkage are known as “N-glycans,” and are classified in three main types: high mannose, hybrid, and complex. Complex N-glycans are terminated at their non-reducing ends with characteristic trisaccharides which Jean Montreuil has named “antennae” to emphasize that the functional role for these terminal structures may be the transmission of biological recognition signals. The antennary hypothesis has inspired a great deal of interest in the structure, function, and biosynthesis of the antennae of branched complex N-glycans. Gal occupies the terminal non-reducing position on N-glycan antennae, and is an uncharged alternative to sialic acid. Although there is relatively little sequence similarity between most of the glycosyl-transferases cloned to date, these enzymes are of approximately the same length and share the same type II integral membrane glycoprotein domain structure. The hydrophobic trans-membrane sequence near the amino-terminus serves to target and anchor the enzyme to the Golgi membrane." @default.
