- W1881593516 abstract "In this dissertation, I examine the appropriation ofNative American cultures and histories in the theatre of theAmerican counterculture of the 1960s and seventies, using theLiving Theatre's Paradise Now , the streettheatricals and broadsides of the San Francisco Diggers, and JamesRado and Gerome Ragni's Hair: The American Tribal-LoveRock Musical as my primary case studies. Definingthemselves by points of difference from mainstream America and itstraditional social and cultural values, counterculturalists oftenattempted to align themselves with Native Americans in order toexpress an imagined sense of shared otherness. Representations ofNatives on countercultural stages, however, were frequently steepedin stereotype, and they often depicted Native culturesinaccurately, elided significant tribal differences, and relegatedNative identity almost wholly to the past, a practice that wasparticularly problematic in light of concurrent Native rightsmovements that were actively engaged in bringing national attentionto the contemporary issues and injustices Native Americans faced ona daily basis. In my study, I analyze the impulses that might haveled counterculturalists to appropriate Native culture during thisperiod, highlighting some of the ways in which such appropriationsplayed out in Paradise Now and Hair , as well as on the streets of SanFrancisco's Haight-Ashbury district. I examine the counterculturaltendency to use stereotyped Native characters as mascots forvarious-and sometimes competing-causes, such as environmentalism, hallucinogenic drug use, communalism, pacifism, and violentactivism, and I demonstrate how such mascotry appeared in thetheatre of the period. I also interrogate the propagation of thetroublesome vanishing stereotype during the sixties andseventies, tracing its development into the popular myth of thehippie as reincarnated Native. Finally, I examine Hanay Geiogamah's1972 play Body Indian as an alternative modelfor more ethical and responsible Native representation, alsoproposing my own guidelines for non-Native artists engaging withNative subject matter in their creative work." @default.
