- W188400911 abstract "Infant pulmonary function tests (IPFTs) can be used to assess lung volumes, forced expiratory maneuvers, and respiratory mechanics in healthy infants and those with respiratory disease. International guidelines for standardizing equipment and measurements have been published. Such measurements are more complex and time consuming than in children and adults, requiring specially trained personnel and facilities. IPFTs are generally performed during sleep (which, beyond the neonatal period, generally requires light sedation), in the supine position, and while breathing through a face mask. There are marked differences in developmental respiratory physiology that must be considered when performing and interpreting results from infants, including the rapid lung and airway growth and the fact that infants are preferential nose breathers and have a highly compliant chest wall. Although IPFTs have occasionally been used in clinical management, their primary role has been in epidemiological and clinical research, where they have been used to investigate early determinants of lung function (including the detrimental effects of maternal smoking, intrauterine growth retardation, and preterm delivery), the nature and severity of various respiratory diseases, airway reactivity, and response to therapeutic interventions, including different types of ventilatory management." @default.
