Surely tenure is seldom granted nowadays without some show of research, with research defined as any activity that leads to publication, although the Management may be satisfied by a rather inept and half-hearted performance if a man is good at other things teaching, for example. Fakery in research is probably diminishing, however, because today's applicants for academic jobs have been aware of publish or perish since the start of their graduate education and have prepared themselves accordingly. One opinion of the effect of such preparation was given by Professor Guillemin, a very famous teacher at M.I.T.: The young teacher of today, with very few exceptions, does not devote such wholehearted effort to a single subject, especially to its teaching aspects. As a result, his attitudes are usually based upon a very limited appreciation of the total picture and, moreover, are biased by those applications which his particular research finds useful . . .
