- W1886945488 abstract "Large dams, built to improve agriculture or to produce hydropower, are increasingly impacting on the lower valleys of African rivers. Prior to the dams the annual floods structured the downstream landscapes and strongly determined local livelihoods. In the post-dam situation new development models, often with contradictory goals, are imposed and may lead to use conflicts e.g. between traditional uses such as fishing, livestock keeping and recession agriculture and new uses such as irrigated agriculture. The impacts of such alterations on estuarine and coastal fisheries are illustrated using two examples. In West Africa, the Senegal River estuary was strongly affected by the construction of the Diama dam. The restoration of part of the deltaic floodplain and the creation of an artificial estuary by managed flood releases has mitigated these negative impacts. In East Africa, the Lower Rufiji Valley is still largely intact but a major hydro-electric dam is in the planning stages. Managed flood release scenarios that could reduce the negative impacts of such a dam on estuarine and coastal fisheries are discussed." @default.
