U.S. literature is defined here as literature that is originally composed mostly in English, but not exclusively, by authors of U.S. background. In this article, as in my personal life, I use the terms and Hispanic interchangeably. Both terms have political and historical connotations that may make them either inappropriate or acceptable for any particular group or individual who may be placed into these general categories. U.S. Latinos or Hispanics in this article refers to races and cultures of people of Latin American ancestry. The word Latina is used to refer to a person of the female gender following Spanish grammatical rules. I became Latina when I first moved to the United States in the 1980s. My looks seem to have revealed my otherness; the blend of histories is apparently evident in my skin color and my curly massive hair. Although I was positioned as Latina or Hispanic as needed, my sense of otherness was rooted in being a new resident in the United States. My shyness and my accents, both my nonnative English and my Colombian Spanish- yes, my Spanish, since it sounded strange among mostly Mexican and Central American accents in Los Angeles- were strong markers in my sense of otherness. In my neighborhood school, I attended a mainstream class but was released to a bilingual teacher for two hours daily.
