- W18880088 abstract "Capillary-gravity waves have been well studied since Laplace, Kelvin and Stokes, and their properties were shown to be mainly determined by the stress conditions at liquid surfaces1–3. Specifically, the major influence of the normal stress to the surface has been emphasized. While these oscillations are rather transverse motions due to the deformation of the surface and surface tension action there is yet another type of wave. It refers to mostly longitudinal motion along the surface3–5. Its existence is not surprising considering that a strong analogy is expected between a monolayer-covered surface and a stretched elastic membrane. The coverage with a surfactant-either by adsorption from solution or by spreading-gives elastic properties to a surface so that it tends to resist the periodic expansion and compression which appears as wave motion. Normally, an interfacial motion has both transverse and longitudinal components, and they are not separable. Only in the case of small amplitude wave motion, transverse and longitudinal waves can be considered as two genuine and independent modes of oscillation.KeywordsLongitudinal WaveCapillary NumberSchmidt NumberMarangoni NumberInstability ThresholdThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
