- W188848809 abstract "Working parents with young children undergo considerable stress as they strive to cope with competing demands from work and family. However, parents’ participation in the workforce has shown to safeguard their personal wellbeing. Given this, it is imperative that parents are adequately supported to help them achieve quality of life, without needing to sacrifice one life domain for the other. Despite demonstrated effectiveness of parenting programs, working parents are among the least likely to access parenting support. In an effort to tailor existing parenting interventions to suit the needs of working parents, consumer engagement was deemed necessary. Qualitative study (via focus groups) and a quantitative component via an online survey were used to examine pertinent issues surrounding work-family balance and preferences regarding parenting support. The study was conducted with 16 working parents (15 females, 1 male) aged 30 – 44 years (M = 39.00). A total of seven themes were identified through thematic analysis: (1) the impact of guilt, (2) crossover effects of work on family, (3) the availability of support, (4) being a quality parent, (5) getting the balance right, (6) having a career counts and (7) the need for low intensity programs. Collectively, it was apparent that despite challenges, most working parents valued having a career. However, guilt emerged as a prevalent issue faced by working parents, and an area that needed addressing. With regards to implications for program design, the possible inclusion of modules on setting realistic expectations and cognitive restructuring is seen as having the potential to help parents overcome guilt feelings. The present paper uses quotes to illustrate key points raised during discussions, and offers a series of recommendations for program modification." @default.
