- W188928433 abstract "Publisher Summary An interesting development in the field of insect pathology has been the identification in recent years of infectious agents possessing the morphology of poxviruses. The original isolation of the infectious principle was made from the grub of the common cockchaffer Melolontha melolontha L. Subsequently, similar disease agents were recognized in natural populations of several orders of insects collected in Europe, Africa, North and South America, Australia, and India, indicating a global distribution of these pathogens. This chapter provides a description of the architecture, chemical constitution, and development of poxviruses parasitizing both insect and vertebrate phyla. The chapter illustrates the basic construction of poxviruses as exemplified by vaccinia, Melolontha, and Amsacta pox. In each of these agents, three major components are evident including a lipoprotein envelope at the surface, lateral bodies, and a centrally positioned plate-like core. These components can be identified both in whole mounts and in thin sections of mature virus particles. In all poxviruses that have been examined by means of thin sections, the space within the core is filled with tightly coiled dense threads, each 20–25 A in width and presumed to be the DNA genome. In some mature particles of both vertebrate and invertebrate poxviruses, a folded cable-like lucent structure is also evident inside the core." @default.
