- W1891154150 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes the application of fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FPR) to measure the lateral motion of fluorescence-labeled viral envelope components in the target cell membrane. Measurement of the degree of lateral mobility in the cell membrane of a fluorescent lipid probe initially incorporated into the viral envelope enables a direct and quantitative determination of the extent of virus–cell fusion. This method can distinguish unambiguously viral particles fused with the plasma membrane from those internalized by the cells and allows studying the distribution of the fusion level within the cell population and on specific cell regions. On the other hand, measurements of the lateral mobility of viral envelope proteins in the target cell membrane provide information on the role of the motion of these proteins in the induction of cell–cell fusion. FPR is used to measure the lateral diffusion of viral envelope components in the cell membrane, following the diffusion of either fluorescent lipid probes initially introduced into the viral envelope or viral envelope proteins labeled with fluorescent Fab ' antibody fragments." @default.
